Is a Georgian marriage certificate valid abroad?
This is the question international couples ask most often. The short answer: a marriage registered in Georgia is documented officially, but how that document is accepted elsewhere is decided by the country and authority receiving it.
What Georgia issues
When you register your marriage at the House of Justice in Batumi, the competent Georgian authority records the marriage and issues an official marriage certificate. That is a Georgian state document, produced under Georgian procedure.
Official description of the service: sda.gov.ge — Marriage registration.
How acceptance abroad usually works
There is no universal rule that makes a Georgian marriage certificate automatically accepted everywhere. In practice, three elements decide the outcome:
- Certification of the document — an apostille, or consular legalisation, depending on the treaties in force between Georgia and the destination country.
- Translation into the language of the receiving country, frequently with notarisation or a sworn translator.
- The rules of the receiving authority — a registry office, migration service, consulate, court or bank may each have slightly different requirements.
The HCCH publishes the current status table for the Apostille Convention: Apostille Convention — Status table.
Questions worth asking before you travel
- Which authority will you submit the certificate to, and for what purpose?
- Does it require an apostille, legalisation, or neither?
- Which translation language and which form of certification does it accept?
- Is there a local registration or reporting step for a marriage concluded abroad?
Answers to these determine how we prepare your package — and they are much cheaper to get before the trip than after it.
Where we can help
We accompany the registration in Batumi, provide notarised passport translations and witnesses, and arrange the apostille with translation into one selected language in the Standard + apostille package at $400. We do not give legal opinions about the effect of your marriage in a specific jurisdiction — for that, contact the authority concerned or a lawyer in that country.
Frequently asked questions
Will our Georgian marriage be recognised in our home country?
A marriage registered by the competent Georgian authority is documented by an official certificate. How that certificate is treated abroad is decided by the receiving country and authority, usually based on its own family and private international law rules and the treaties in force. Check with that authority before you travel.
What is normally required for a certificate to be accepted?
In most cases: the original certificate, an apostille or consular legalisation depending on the applicable treaties, and a translation into the language of the receiving country, often notarised.
Do you provide legal advice on recognition?
No. We are a marriage registration assistance service in Batumi, not a law firm. We explain the procedure and prepare documents; questions about legal effect in a specific country should be confirmed with that country's authority or a qualified lawyer there.
Can you prepare the documents for a specific country?
We can arrange the Georgian apostille and a translation into one selected language under the Standard + apostille package at $400. You should still confirm the receiving authority's exact requirements — such as translation certification, additional legalisation or local registration steps — directly with that authority or a qualified lawyer there.
