Documents for marriage in Georgia: what you actually submit in Batumi
The paperwork for getting married in Georgia is short, but international couples usually have a few extra details to sort out. Here is what is genuinely checked at the House of Justice in Batumi.
The basic set
- A joint written application from both partners. The registration itself requires both of you to be present in person.
- Identity documents for each partner — for foreign nationals this is normally a valid international passport.
- Documents of two witnesses — two adults with legal capacity.
- Proof that a previous marriage has ended, if there was one (divorce or the death of a spouse).
- Lawful presence in Georgia at the time you apply.

Apostille and translation of foreign documents
Foreign documents other than your identity document may require an apostille or consular legalisation, plus a notarised translation into Georgian. In practice this mostly concerns divorce and death certificates and civil-status statements issued in another country.
The exact requirement depends on the country that issued the document and on the treaties in force. That is why we look at scans first and only then tell you what has to be apostilled — it is cheaper than carrying documents you never needed.
